Summary : Junco Coot can’t even remember her trip off Earth; she was too busy being morphed into her new avian body.  But reality hits her hard when she wakes up to find her new life is not what she expected. Not even close. Tier is on trial for disobeying his commander’s kill order and only Junco seems to care.

In most places the avian coming-of-age Fledge ritual would be nothing more than mass murder, but here in the capital city of Amelia, it’s called growing up. Junco has no choice; either fight to the death to prove her worth or get sent back to Earth in the hands of her enemies.

Her new military team is hostile, her body is being taken over by an illicit artificial intelligence, the avian president wants her dead, and her only friend is a ten-year old throwaway boy.

On a foreign habitat, in a foreign culture, and surrounded by people she can’t trust or count on, Junco must find a way to save herself and Tier without losing her immortal soul in the process.

Review

Wow!! Literally, wow! Fledge did not disapoint in any way possible. Talk about twists and turns! There were things that even I didn't see coming and usually I can spot stuff happening a mile away. This book had more drama and heartache than some of the soap operas on televison. Seriously, this book was Awesome! I am so happy that the orginality and creative writing was still going full force in this book just like it was in the first one. Here we see more about Junco and what has kept her going and what makes her tick. In this book I saw her grow much more and really become something that I think we all struggle with, becoming ones true self. Whatever that is.

Tier is on trial and so this book you don't get to see much about him. Other characters are introduced along with Junco's military team that is pretty awesome and interesting. We also find out what the deal is with the Seven Siblings and find out more about the mythology and history of pretty much everything.

I'm starting the third book now because I have to know what is going to happen. I've heard great things so fingers crossed it is just as good, if not better.

About the Author
J.A. Huss

J. A. Huss never took a creative writing class in her life. Some would say it shows. Others might cut her some slack. She did however, get educated and graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Equine Science. She had grand dreams of getting a Ph.D. but while she loves science, she hated academia and settled for a M.S. in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida.

She went on to write science curriculum for homeschoolers and now runs a successful home business that creates and offers online science unit studies. When she’s not writing science curriculum or fiction, she works as a farm inspector, traveling the Eastern Plains of Colorado in variety of environmentally friendly vehicles that never have four-wheel drive, so when she gets stuck in the mud in said vehicles, she has to beg for assistance from anyone who will help her. She is not bitter about that at all.

She’s always packing heat and she is owned by two donkeys, five dogs, more chickens and ducks than she can count, and of course, the real filthy animals, her kids. The I Am Just Junco series was born after falling in love with the ugliest part of Colorado and the Rural Republic is based on the area of the state she currently resides in, minus the mutants, of course.

Chapter Five

Tish threw her head back and screamed out in ecstasy. She rode Dr. Kemp’s dick as hard as she could until she felt herself lose control. Sensing her release, Dr. Kemp grabbed her hips and pounded into her deeply, the juices that oozed from her pussy made a slapping sound with each stroke. He grunted like a wild animal just before he exploded inside of her. Satisfied, she collapsed on top of him. Dr. Kemp wasn’t the best lover she had ever had, but he would do in a pinch. At least she wouldn’t have to satisfy herself with one of her many dildos.
She had made mental plans to take Dr. Miller home with her from the Christmas party and let him fuck her brains out, but she lost sight of him when the lights were dimmed for couples to slow dance. She had looked everywhere but was unable to find him.
Dr. Kemp called her just as she was leaving the Christmas party, crooning in the phone about how much he wanted to taste her pussy. She declined at first but after she saw Dr. Miller drive past her in the parking, she decided some pleasure was better than nothing. She considered calling Dr. Miller on his cell phone but changed her mind knowing he wouldn’t take her call. He hadn’t accepted or returned her phone calls in over a year.
She was determined to get Dr. Miller back in her bed. The man was just as relentless sexually as he was in the operating room. He didn’t stop until he was sure she was satisfied. Tish tried to move on, but found that each of her new lovers lacked the enthusiasm Dr. Miller had.
She had made it her business to tell everyone at Kingdom hospital that he was hers, hoping that no one would go out with him. If he wasn’t able to get sex from anywhere else then maybe he would at least be willing to fuck her from time to time. After all, she wasn’t looking for a long-term relationship, just a little fun. Tish liked her life just as it was, with no one to tie her down.
Dr. Kemp pushed Tish off of him and rose from her bed. He stood over her and smiled a devilish smile.
“Thanks for letting me come by,” Dr. Kemp told her.
“Thanks for stopping by,” Tish replied.
“Do you mind if use your bathroom?”
“You know the way, down the hall and to the left. There are clean towels under the sink,” Tish told him before she turned her back to him.
“I think your phone is ringing,” Dr. Kemp yelled from the bathroom.
Tish hurried from her bed. She grabbed her cell phone from her evening bag. She pressed the send button to return the call and waited for someone to answer. If someone had called and in and she had to go into Kingdom Hospital and cover she was going to kill somebody.
“Kingdom Hospital, this is Jean. How may I help you?” Jean said in her most professional voice.
“Hey, Jean. This is Tish. Someone just called me.”
“Girl, you are not going to believe who I just saw all up in Dr. Miller’s face not ten minutes ago.”
"Who?” Tish asked.
“Carla. She was smiling up in his face like a school girl.”
“That little bitch,” Tish yelled. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Dr. Kemp standing in the door way of her living room smiling at her seductively.
“Jean let me call you back. I have to take care of something right quick,” Tish said. She pressed the end button before Jean could reply. She needed to get Dr. Kemp out of her apartment so she could decided what she was going to do about Carla and Dr. Miller.
“Thanks for stopping by,” Tish said dryly.
“Oh, you’re ready for me to go. I thought I could lick that juicy twat of yours before I left,” Dr. Kemp said, as he moved closer to Tish and slipped his hands between her legs stroking her clit gently, causing a moan to escape her lips.
Dr. Kemp leaned down and sucked at her left breast while he lifted her from the ground and carried her to the couch. He dropped to his knees and buried his head between her open legs and licked and sucked at her hole greedily.
Dr. Kemp licked and sucked at Tish’s pussy just the way she liked it, rough. Tish grabbed the back of Dr. Kemp’s head and pressed his face into her pussy. Dr. Kemp sucked at her hard clitoris and felt it pulsate. He automatically applied more pressure to her clit, when Tish arched her back. She screamed out as a strong orgasm careened through her body. Dr. Kemp released her clit and applied his lips to the opening of her pussy and lapped up her juices. He loved the slightly salty taste of her pussy juices.
Satisfied, Tish pushed his head away and stood up. Dr. Kemp ran his hand across her caramel colored round bare ass. He loved how high and firm her ass was. If he didn’t have to go home to his wife he could suck, rub and kiss her ass all day and night. He couldn’t get enough of Tish, mostly because she lacked inhibition and enjoyed sex as long as she was satisfied repeatedly. She was the perfect mistress because she expected nothing more from him except sexual satisfaction.
“You need to go,” Tish said.
“When can I see you again?” Dr. Kemp asked.
“Just call me I let you know if I’m available.”
Dr. Kemp rose to his feet and grabbed his coat and hat. He took one last look at Tish’s lean, toned, naked body. He reached down and rubbed his hard dick through his slacks before he headed out the door. He would wake his wife when he got home to relieve himself.
Tish couldn’t wait for him to leave. She needed time to think. Dr. Kemp worked hard to please her, but just like all the other men since Dr. Miller, he was unable to satiate a deeper need inside of her. Dr. Kemp was only useful for their usually sexual romps. Dr. Kemp loved to eat her pussy and her ass, adding extra variety to the line of men she often fucked.
Now she needed to figure out what she was going to do about little miss goody two shoes. Carla was not about to come between her and Dr. Miller. He was going to be with her whether he knew it or not.

Format: E-book & Paperback

Book Description

She killed his father.

She imprisoned and beat him.

And now she thinks he’s her trophy.

Synn El’Asim will do almost anything to prove her wrong. But he’s only proving her right.

Queen Nix awakened his Mark of power and inducted him into the House of Wands. She knew what she was doing. The son of the two most powerful Families standing against her is the ultimate prize.

What she didn’t take into consideration was that maybe he was too strong for her.

Maybe.

But the Families aren’t. They’ve been weakened and it’ll take a lot more than one young man with a powerful Mark to take on the Hands of Tarot.

Excerpt

As soon as my eyes adjusted to the brightness, the air escaped from my lungs. Before us was carnage. There were two wooden pyres burned to smoking ruin with the charred remains of people on top of them. The air reeked with the smell of burned flesh. Several more pyres stood, two currently burning, three more untouched, all of them in a circle surrounding a large cage.
Filled with children.
Guards walked from one of the burning pyres and lit torches, walking to the neighboring one to set it ablaze.
The children inside whimpered. One screamed, her hand reaching through the bars. Most of them silently wept, watching as their loved ones succumbed to the smoke.
I couldn’t just stand by and watch this. I took a step forward, my hand going for my sword.
My father stopped me, his eyes troubled with sorrow.
Queen Nix turned to me and smiled. “Do you wish to declare war?”
“Let them go,” I commanded, my voice ragged. “What have they done to you?”
She stalked toward me, her nose nearly touching mine, all semblance of beauty twisted with rage. “They refused to submit to me.”
I stared at her aghast, my hands clenched, my jaw tight. “So because you couldn’t control them, you’re going to destroy them?”
The rage turned cold across her features as she drew away, her shoulders back.
“Are you so weak?” The muscles in my cheek twitched.
Father took a step toward us. “Perhaps we can reach a mutual agreement.”
Someone in the cage screamed, the scream turning to ravaged sobs.
I let out a growl. “You will stop this!”
The queen turned her eagle-eyed stare to me. “I do not take orders from a mere boy.”
“Queen Nix,” my father started, “let us be reasonable.”
She took a step back and assessed him.
“The Umira have never been a harmful Family.” My father’s hands were wide at his side, his expression open. “They have always lived in peace with the Hands.”
Her eyes flared and she advanced on him. “You’ve allied yourself with them.”
Father’s eyes widened as he took a half step back.
I watched in alarm, unsure of what to do. My father was the strongest man I ever knew.
The queen grabbed his coat and pulled his face close to hers. “The Umira have always been a peaceful Family, so imagine my surprise when they assaulted us with cannons and weapons.”
“They have the right to defend themselves, Nix.”
“Not against me.” She pushed him away and turned to her gathering guard. “Take him and his heathen son. Throw them on the pyre.”
My father drew his sword and faced the guard. “Go, Synn, now!”
Our men drew their weapons and stood by his side.
“I’m not leaving you, Father.” My sword was in my hand. I was ready to die an honorable death by my father’s side.
He backhanded me and roared, “You will protect our people, Synn El’Asim.”
I was torn. I wanted so badly to fight beside him, to protect him.
But my father had given me an order. One I could not ignore.
I turned and ran.
Review

The Hands of Tarot started out slow and did not catch my interest at all. It took a lot for me to keep going but I did in hopes things would start to change and maybe I would start to understand this book a little more. Well, the story did get better, it got a lot better actually and I am so glad that I kept reading. Whether I understand anything about the book, the jury is still out but that doesn't really matter. What matters is that Blooding has written an amazing story with the most fascinating and amazing world that I wish existed. Flying cities and air ships have always been something that has fascinated me and this story brings that and more alive. The world that she has created is even more than what I could have imagined. It is simply amazing. I will say there are something’s about it that even I have yet to figure out such as what exactly letharans are but I do know they make the story that much better.

I wouldn’t say that this was the easiest book to follow because for me it wasn't but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be for anyone else and that shouldn't stop anyone from checking this book out for themselves. The writing is awesome and the story itself is original and completely entertaining. When I finally got into this book it was hard to put it down because it ended up being a page turner. I can't wait to see what happens in the second book.

I give this book

What Readers Are Saying

The world of Lark's End is topsy-turvy...I admit that I was prepared to be confused and disappointed when I started reading this story. Shifts of location left me feeling lost and for a YA book the language seemed too simplistic. After the first couple of chapters I was comfortable feeling lost. And very grateful for the language. By the middle of the book I was breathless keeping up with the journey of the companions. Far from being simplistic, Lark's End requires your full attention to follow the dream-like transformations and fast-paced movement...After reading Lark's End, I don't think there would be any trouble getting your YA to read Kafka or Borges.

-Speculative Salon Reviews

Lark's End: Whoa, I knew you had a good imagination but Lark's End was outrageously creative. At first I wasn't sure that I would like it, it seemed a bit far out there but I loved it. It reminded me of worlds created like Alice in Wonderland or C.S. Lewis's Narnia. You are a great author/story teller. The world you created with all the wonderful creatures (my favorite being the stars) was so captivating. I can't wait to find this book and buy it for my kids. I really do have such respect for your talent as a writer. C I N was a book for me... Lark's End is a book for everyone, children and adults can both enjoy it. I was amazed and I can't wait to find out what happens next.. People that love to get lost in a book that can transport them to a fabulous new world are going to cherish Lark's End.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt 1
Father set the young boy on a metal table. He held him down with leather hand and leg cuffs. “Father, please!” Alex jerked about. “It hurts, the changes always hurt.”
He held a long needle in his hand. Father flicked the instrument and a light green liquid seeped out. Alex thrashed about, his heart pounding. “No!”
Father jabbed the needle into Alex’s ten year old hip. “This batch will work. Alex, you will be amazing!”
“Let him go!”
“Father, please!”
“Alex is the perfect test subject. His DNA is easy to alter. He adapts best to changes. He’s nearly perfect in every way.” Father frowned when his eyes set on Lily. “Lily, I always thought so much of you. But, that child you gave me is not working out. I’m afraid I’ll have to trash her.”
“You will not!” Lily twitched. Her body convulsed. She stood on her knees and rested against her palms. What was happening to her?
“What’s happening to my mom?” Mary cried. She recoiled into the corner of her cell.
Lily’s skin ripped. Long legs protruded out of her hip bone and shoulders. A thorax burst its way through her back. She screamed. “What’s happening to me?”
Mary covered her ears. “MOMMY!” She rocked back and forth. “Mom, not my mom. Don’t die, don’t die.”
“It’s happening!” Father exclaimed. He hurried over to Lily’s cage. “The experiment worked. My girl is changing! They thought I was mad. MAD! But, I knew all along that I could do it. If this one works then all of my experiments will work.” He turned into Mary’s direction and pointed at the little girl. “That means you get to live.”
Excerpt 2
Charles stood in the bathroom searching the medicine cabinet for his back patches. “Pharmacy, back restoration patches, quantity one.” Was Tahmi going to turn into a juvenile delinquent?
“Dispensing one back restoration patch.” The medicine cabinet opened.
“Found them!” He snatched the exposed product.
“What’s going on out there?” Donna shouted from the bedroom.
“Our daughter has broken her door, window and our staircase.”
“She’s what?” Donna sat up. “Charles, why aren’t you disciplining her?”
“Tahmi hurt her back. I’m more interested in that, right now.”
He took the steps two at a time. She was probably at the table eating jello. “Tahmi, here’s the patches. Once you’re feeling better we’re going to have a talk.”
Charles stopped.
The front door was ajar.
The kitchen—empty, dining room—no one and the living room was so quiet that he could hear his heart pounding.
“Tahmi?”
“Charles!” Peg screamed. She was in a fluffy pink robe and curlers. Her face was green with some sort of mask and she wore dirty slippers.
“What’s the matter, Peg?”
“Andy—he’s, he’s gone.”
Excerpt 3
“TRUSTY!”
They turned abruptly.
Tahmi scrambled to her feet. “Where’s the firelight? Someone’s blown it out.”
Jerry sat, rubbing his eyes. “It probably went out on its own.”
“No.” She panicked. “I felt it grow cold instantly. Someone is out there.”
Andy and Teri woke. “What do you mean?” Andy mumbled, still half asleep. “Are you sure you’re not just paranoid? You can get a little wacky when you’re tired.”
“No,” Tahmi stood now, “Something is watching us. I can feel it.”
Sandy and Trusty circled, trying to catch every shadow that danced about. Was one of them a threat?
“Teri, get up. We need you.” Andy shook her.
“I’m awake. Who could sleep with all that noise?”
“Up, up.” Andy grabbed her underneath the shoulders. “Something is going to attack us. I’m not in the mood to die right now.”
“And I suppose you expect me to save you?”
“Kinda, yeah.”
“I’m too weak.” She collapsed against the wall. “I’ve tried to emit acid so that maybe I could burn this oil off my skin but I can’t seem to do it. I tried—”
Andy covered her mouth with his hand. “Shh.”
Tahmi and Jerry stuck close. He squinted. Was there really something watching them? “I’ll relight the fire.”
He tossed in dried branches, watching the flames light the cave.
Jerry couldn’t believe his eyes.
Tahmi took his hand, trembling. “Please tell me this is just a nightmare.”
“This is just a nightmare,” Jerry said.
“Not funny.” She backed into him. Her body nestled with his.
They looked at the cave walls.
Thousands of black shadows stared at them with glowing green eyes.
“Run,” Jerry whispered. He took her hand and dragged her towards the opening of the cave.
